Danfloor is pleased to announce that their Evolution, Economix and Equinox Collections have now received independently verified EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations).
Assessing the products on a cradle to grave basis the products have been assessed and certified as a type III environmental declaration that is compliant with the ISO 14025 standard.
Calculating the embodied carbon footprint of the materials used in construction has previously been a tricky job, but with the introduction of a standardised way of providing data about the environmental impacts of a product through its lifecycle with an EPD makes this job slightly less tricky.
EPDs are unlike BRE Certification where you receive an exact rating such as an A+, an EPD provides the relevant data about a product that you can then compare with other similar products at the building level to determine its environmental impact.
EPDs help in carpet specification by providing comprehensive and standardised information about a product's environmental impact throughout its four life cycle stages: manufacturing, construction, day-to-day use and end of life. EPDs make it easier for you to understand a product's sustainable qualities and environmental repercussions, allowing you to make more informed product selections.
With regards to carpets, EPDs provide transparent and credible information on the material flows and environmental impacts that happen during the entire life of a carpet. This information includes raw material extraction, energy use, emissions to air, soil and water, and water use and waste generation. It will also report seven environmental impact indicators: global warming potential, acidification, eutrophication, stratospheric ozone depletion potential, photochemical ozone creation potential, and two types of abiotic depletion.
Independently verified EPDs are also used to meet sustainability goals and comply with environmental regulations. Many organisations require EPDs as part of their procurement process to ensure that their products meet certain environmental standards and may also help to earn credits under green building rating systems such as LEED.
