Heathland House

Heathland House offers residents person-centred residential and dementia care within exquisite surroundings in the heart of the Dorset community.

THE AIM

The Cinnamon Care Collection is an exclusive group of luxury care homes and retirement developments in beautiful locations throughout the country. Opened in 2022 in Ferndown, Dorset, Cinnamon’s luxury care home Heathland House brings first-class care and a wealth of superb amenities to the community.

Heathland House is a first-class 59-bed care home with seven luxury care suits. Through the design Cinnamon Care aimed to create an understated, elegant, homely environment with the injection of bold colours and patterns.

To achieve their aims they sought the building expertise of The Highwood Group and the design and fit-out capabilities of Catalyst Interiors. The discerning design and build of the home also needed to be inclusive for those living with dementia by using plain floor, wallcoverings and upholsteries as well as relevant themed areas.

THE SOLUTION

The Reception, Lounges & Dining Rooms were designed to display Cinnamon’s signature schemes to create uniformity amongst their other homes but also provide fresh environments with re-invented schemes in the feature communal areas.

Whilst creating a “WOW” environment consideration was also given to creating a dementia-inclusive scheme through the specified products and ensuring that the flooring worked with the rest of the design. The flooring must aid navigation and confidence in movement. For those with dementia, it needs to work effectively with other colours and not be too distracting to the eye.

As a result, Catalyst specified several ranges from the danfloor collection. Firstly, Equinox Evolve in colour Hazel has been approved for use in dementia-inclusive environments by Stirling Universities DSDC. In addition, the more patterned designs of Manhattan, Geo Form and Forest were used for the features areas like the lobby, reception, cinema room, and private dining room in addition to some lounges, care suites, bedrooms and office areas.

THE OUTCOME

The stylish décor and furnishings reflect the resident’s choice of lifestyle and compliments the first-class compassionate care which is on offer at the home.
The designs and colours of the Evolution Collection add that splash of colour and support the signature schemes in feature areas. The use of the Equinox Collection in the dementia-inclusive areas helps to support those living with a cognitive condition and helps to provide an environment that is therapeutic and aims to reduce stress-related behaviours.

Cinnamon Care required carpets that had been engineered to perform in demanding environments. Within a Care Home, you must provide materials that are fit for purpose and provide the following key features:

  • Extreme durability– The Evolution Collection is certified to British Standard classification 33 “Heavy Commercial Use” enabling it to withstand high volumes of foot and wheeled traffic and intense commercial cleaning. Making the ranges ideal for corridors and communal areas.
  • Appearance Retention– Manufactured using solution dyed Nylon and Polypropylene yarns, both the Evolution and Equinox Collection offer a locked-in colourfast system which ensures superior colour and light-fastness even when subject to harsh cleaning chemicals.
  • Spill safe– All of the selected carpets have an integral protective membrane, preventing liquid spills from penetrating through to the subfloor, reducing contamination, fungal growth and unpleasant odours.
  • Antimicrobial yarn treatment– Both of the Collections have been developed to include Bi-Ome®, an innovative antimicrobial treatment which is designed to kill harmful bacteria including those that can cause MRSA and E-coli.
  • Naturally Sound absorbent– danfloor carpets have great sound absorption qualities, achieving more than 28dB reduction in sound impact levels, which helps to create a “therapeutic environment” in which people can relax and communicate effectively.
  • DSDC Approved Colours – Stirling University has reviewed a number of our ranges and has awarded all colours from the Equinox Evolve as suitable for use within dementia design.
