Fernwood

Fernwood, Exemplar Health Care’s newest care home supports up to 28 adults living with dementia, neuro-disabilities including acquired brain injuries, complex mental health needs and physical disabilities.

THE AIM

Fernwood is Exemplar Health Care’s seventh care home in the Merseyside region. The home supports people with complex and high acuity needs on their rehabilitation journey from hospital or living in a secure setting to community-based living. The home also provides long-term support for people living with degenerative or life-limiting illnesses.

With a total of 28 bedrooms, each equipped with en-suite facilities, Fernwood is divided into two 14-bed units tailored to meet diverse needs. Each unit boasts expansive communal areas, dedicated sensory and therapy rooms, and easy access to beautifully landscaped gardens and courtyards. Walter Thompson, a contractor based in the North East, was tasked with revitalising the existing structure on Knowsley Lane. Their objective was to create an inclusive environment at Fernwood that prioritises resident support and rehabilitation.

 

THE SOLUTION

Renowned for its commitment to delivering exceptional, person-cantered care, Exemplar Health Care prioritises the needs of its residents. Therefore, it was imperative that the interior design seamlessly aligned with this ethos.

In pursuit of this goal, Exemplar Health Care turned to danfloor to supply carpets for several key areas, including the lounge and quiet lounge in both units. Recognising the functional advantages of carpeting, such as sound absorption, insulation, and enhanced comfort, these choices were made to optimise the usability of the space.

For this project, Equinox Tones was the preferred option. An number of colours were chosen from the range for this project but ‘mushroom’ was specifically selected for the lounge areas to harmonise with the serene interior palette, providing an ideal backdrop for the integration of colours and patterns in textiles and other finishing touches.

THE OUTCOME

Fernwood is a haven with multiple aims. It’s a place where vulnerable adults can adjust to community living and a home for those with degenerative or life limiting illnesses. Their residents are at the heart of Exemplar Health Care’s ethos and the care they provide, therefore their living spaces have to be safe and comfortable.

To help them achieve this our Collections offer the following key features:

• Durability – The Equinox Collection is certified to British Standard classification 32 “Normal Commercial Use” enabling it to withstand high volumes of foot and wheeled traffic and intense commercial cleaning. Making the ranges ideal for the corridors and communal areas.
• Antimicrobial yarn treatment – Equinox Tones feature Bi-Ome®, an advanced permanent antimicrobial treatment specifically crafted to eliminate harmful bacteria, including those responsible for infections such as MRSA and C. Diff.
• Spill safe – All of the selected carpets have an integral protective membrane, preventing liquid spills from penetrating through to the subfloor, reducing contamination, fungal growth, and unpleasant odours.
• Naturally Sound absorbent – Danfloor carpets exhibit excellent sound absorption characteristics, surpassing a 28dB reduction in sound impact levels. This contributes to the establishment of a “therapeutic environment,” fostering relaxation and effective communication for individuals within the space.
• Appearance Retention – Crafted from a solution-dyed polypropylene yarn, the Equinox Collections present a colourfast system that locks in vibrant hues. This ensures exceptional colour and light-fastness, maintaining their brilliance even when exposed to rigorous cleaning chemicals.
• Soft Underfoot – Carpets offer a soft and inviting surface, providing residents and staff with comfort underfoot. The soft fibres create a homely atmosphere, encouraging residents to feel at ease and fostering a sense of familiarity and comfort within the environment.
