Education design is all about creating an environment that is stimulating, inspiring and welcoming. Good design within schools and universities can positively affect student learning and teacher satisfaction and there are many ways in which a school carpet can benefit an education environment whether it’s within a classroom or boarding house.

ENHANCING THE LEARNING SPACE

INCREASED COMFORT

Carpets can be a useful way of creating flexible learning spaces, making it comfortable for students and teachers to sit, stand and even lie down on the floor. With many teachers standing for a large proportion of their time carpet also increases underfoot comfort and reduces muscle fatigue. In the “National Survey of Public School Teachers” carried out in 2001, the majority of public school teachers surveyed said that they preferred carpet for its comfort, noise reduction and safety benefits.

IMPROVING THE INTERNAL ENVIRONMENT

Carpets can naturally improve acoustics, reduce energy consumption and help with indoor air quality, all of which should be a key consideration for education facilities when selecting a flooring product and considering the ongoing life-cycle costs.

SOUND ABSORBPTION

Carpets can also be used to create zonal learning areas, different colours and textures can be used to specify the use of different areas. In primary education many students spend much greater time sat on the floor and the warmth and comfort of a soft flooring finish can provide many benefits. In addition to the learning environments, the living environments can also benefit from the use of carpet including fantastic sound absorption qualities which creates a setting conducive to rest, relaxation and ideal for studying.

Education facilities have also been required to create safe working and communal living environments during the pandemic.
