Winnersh Dementia Care Home

The new innovate 60 bed care home provides specialist dementia care in a revolutionary setting. The circular design enables freedom of movement around the building for residents and direct access to safe and secure gardens from the ground floor.

THE AIM

Developed specifically for people with dementia, leading not-for profit care operator Abbeyfield wanted to provide a care home that was not only comfortable and safe but also enables residents to enjoy new levels of independence.
At the top of Abbeyfield’s requirements was to enable residents to have the choice of how they spent their day. The circular design of the home, with no corridor dead ends, means residents are free to walk around inside and out wherever and whenever they choose. This free flow to the gardens and court yards supports
Abbeyfield’s ‘Breath of Fresh Air’ strategy which encourages residents to get outside. Abbeyfield believes this improves appetites, and improves residents’ overall well-being.
Developers Castleoak specified carpet throughout the bedrooms, corridors and communal lounges. The carpets needed to be hard wearing, durable and easy to clean, in addition to offering an impervious layer and an antimicrobial yarn treatment as standard.

THE SOLUTION

With the above in mind danfloor’s Equinox Tones and ECONOMIX collection were a natural choice for the new care home. With each ground floor bedroom offering direct access to a garden or court yard tracked in dirt would need to be easily removed. The Equinox Tones collection installed in all bedrooms offers a yarn with a unique cross section, which is engineered to deliver purity in colour and light refraction properties that helps
to diffuse any visual soiling and ensures that dirt remains on the surface of the carpet for easy extraction. The solution dyed yarn can also withstand regular commercial cleaning, even with bleach based chemicals.
Top Mark Flooring, one of Castleoak’s and danfloor’s preferred suppliers, were tasked with the fit out of the flooring and carried out the entire installation fitting Equinox Tones Mushroom within the bedrooms and ECONOMIX in colour 222 within the corridors and communal lounge.

We are so proud of this innovative development and extremely pleased with our choice of carpets.

THE OUTCOME

In addition to providing ideal cleaning and maintenance properties the carpet also supports the care home design to minimise trips and falls. Carpet is proven to increase confidence and gait speed for older people as well as decreasing any injuries incurred as a result of a trip or fall. The pile weight and height of both the Equinox Tones and ECONOMIX range allows the use of walking aids and wheelchairs and also helps to maintain appearance retention. Both Castleoak and Abbeyfield are very proud of this innovative development and are extremely pleased with their choice of carpets which provide a number of performance features to ensure the flooring performs and maintains its appearance over time.
In summary both Collections offer the following features:

Extreme durability – ECONOMIX is certified to British standard classification 33 “Heavy Commercial Use” enabling it to withstand high volumes of foot and wheeled traffic and intense commercial cleaning, it’s therefore ideal for use within the care home corridors and communal lounges.

Appearance Retention – Manufactured using solution dyed Nylon and Polypropylene yarns, both the ECONOMIX and Equinox Collection offer a locked in colourfast system which ensures superior colour and lightfastness even when subject to harsh cleaning chemicals.

Spill safe – ECONOMIX and Equinox have an integral protective membrane, preventing liquid spills penetrating through the sub floor, reducing contamination, fungal growth and unpleasant odours.

Antimicrobial yarn treatment – Both ranges has been developed to include Bi-Ome® innovative antimicrobial treatment which is designed to kill harmful bacteria including those that can cause MRSA and E-coli.
