JUNCTION 17

Greater Manchester West NHS mental health trust has invested £10 million into a new purpose-built mental health facility for children and adolescents living with anxiety, depression, eating disorders and psychosis.

Junction 17 is a 20 bed unit at Prestwich Hospital and offers a specialist adolescent mental health service for young people who require assessment and treatment for a range of complex mental health difficulties. Junction 17 provides a wide range of services both in the community and within a state of the art inpatient unit.

THE AIM

The condition of a clinical environment has a massive influence on how a patient feels. Research suggests that recovery times can improve when an individual is cared for in an attractive and therapeutic environment.

Working closely with Gilling Dod Architects Greater Manchester West Mental Health Trust wanted to move away from the traditional and stereotypical “psychiatric ward” and create a light, clean, stylish and airy environment to inspire the young people’s recovery.

THE SOLUTION

Whilst trying to create a safe environment the Trust worked hard to design a stylish and colourful interior. Striking colours including Jazzberry and Aurora were selected from the Equinox Stripe and Tones ranges to create this co-ordinating, inspiring and welcoming setting.

The Equinox collection was selected for its exceptional performance characteristics, sound absorption properties and 10 year wear guarantee. In addition to this the ranges have a luxurious and quality look to them whilst still providing a cost effective flooring solution for the unit. Furthermore in years to come the carpets will maintain their look and feel even when subject to liquid spills and abrasive cleaning regimes.

Junction 17 moves away from the traditional and stereotypical “psychiatric ward” and creates an inspiring environment for young people.

THE OUTCOME

Junction 17 and the Trust are dedicated to investing in mental health services for young people and the new centre demonstrates their commitment to improve the quality of mental health services for young people in Greater Manchester.

Staff and NHS Trust managers are exceptionally pleased with the Equinox Stripe and Tones ranges which provide the following key features:

  • Made from Prism™ Fibre which enhances the colour of the carpet and minimises the effects of visual soiling.
  • Includes Bi-Ome® an antimicrobial yarn treatment which kills micro-organisms when they come into contact with the fibre
  • Has an impervious membrane which stops surface spills reaching the sub floor
  • Has great sound absorption qualities which reduce noise reverberation times and creates a “therapeutic environment” in which people tend to communicate more quietly.
